오늘날 사회에서 청소년들의 운동 및 신체 활동 부족은 흔한 문제로 지적되고 있습니다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 헝가리 청소년 스포츠 협회(Hungarian Youth Sport Association)는 ‘국제 청소년 스포츠의 날(International Youth Sport Day, IYSD)’을 제정했습니다. 이 행사는 매년 9월 마지막 금요일에 헝가리뿐 아니라 전 세계 44개국에서 동시에 열립니다. 이 행사의 목적은 학교 체육 수업 시간 외에도 아이들이 여가시간 동안 자발적으로 스포츠를 즐기도록 장려하는 데 있습니다.

행사에는 헝가리의 유명 가수들도 함께 참여해 공개 댄스 워밍업을 진행했습니다. 또한 부다페스트에서는 ‘올해의 숫자만큼 달리기’라는 공공 달리기 행사가 열렸는데, 올해의 달리기 거리는 2025년을 상징하는 2,025미터였습니다.

이번 프로젝트는 수많은 단체와 NGO의 헌신적인 노력과 끈기 없이는 불가능했을 것입니다. 헝가리 청소년 스포츠 협회 커뮤니케이션 리더 안드레아 실라지(Andrea Szilàgyi)에 따르면, 모든 것은 21년 전 헝가리 내에서만 시행된 ‘헝가리 청소년 스포츠의 날(Hungarian Youth Sport Day)’에서 시작되었습니다.

이 행사는 큰 인기를 얻었고, 헝가리 밖에서도 주목받으면서 Erasmus 스포츠 프로그램 지원을 받아 유럽 차원으로 확대될 수 있었습니다.

2019년에 전환점이 찾아왔습니다. 유럽 외 지역의 40개국(마카오, 홍콩, 케냐 등)이 이 프로젝트의 중요성을 인식하고 참여 의사를 밝힌 것입니다. 이로 인해 이 날은 더 이상 ‘국가의 날’이나 ‘유럽의 날’이 아니라, 전 세계적으로 아이들의 건강과 복지를 기념하는 ‘국제적인 날’로 자리매김하게 되었습니다.

결국 헝가리는 전 세계 어린이들의 건강과 행복 증진을 주도하며, 앞으로도 더 많은 나라들이 이 운동에 동참하도록 설득할 계획입니다. 이는 헝가리의 아동 중심 정책과 가치관과도 완벽하게 일치합니다. 빅토르 오르반(Viktor Orbán) 총리는 여러 차례 MTVA와의 인터뷰에서 “아이들이 없는 미래는 없다(No future without children)”고 강조했습니다.

[Coios View ⑰] The International Youth Sport Day: a Hungarian success story

The lack of sport and physical activities is a common issue among young people in today’s society. To fight against this issue, the Hungarian Youth Sport Association has launched the International Youth Sport Day (IYSD) taking place every September last Friday in Hungary and 44 countries all around the World. The event’s purpose is to encourage children doing sport beyond the sport classes that are offered at school: during all their free time.

This year’s IYSD took place on the Friday 26th of September 2025 and was a historical success. There were over 3 million children around the world involved including 500 thousand in Hungary. That represents an increase of 100 thousand people or 25% compared to the previous year on the national level. To make that possible, there were 1400 schools involved in the initiative promoting the motto: “learning by moving”. The event was also accompanied by some of Hungary’s most famous singers who proposed a public dancing warm-up. There has also been a public running in Budapest where the task consisted of running the distance corresponding to the year. This year’s running distance was 2025 meters. 

This project would have been totally impossible without a considerable amount of work and endurance besides several organisations and NGO’s for this event to become as big and internationally recognised. As we know it from Andrea Szilàgyi, communication leader of the Hungarian Youth Sport Association, everything began 21 years ago where this day was only declared at a national level by the Hungarian Youth Sport Association, known as the Hungarian Youth Sport Day. As the initiative was so popular and also attracted attention outside of Hungary, that it even won an Erasmus sport application that allowed it to be promoted at a European level. The big turn came in 2019, when several countries outside of Europe (40 in total) also wanted to join the project because they recognised the importance of sport for the youth. Such countries are Macau, Hong Kong or Kenya. All these joining countries allowed this day to become neither a national, nor a European, but an international celebration of something important for us all: the health and well being of our children. 

As we see, Hungary was able to promote the well being of the children all around the world and will try to convince further countries (beyond the 40). This perfectly aligns with Hungary’s policy and fundamental values towards children. In several interviews that the prime minister Viktor Orbàn gave to MTVA, he always underlined that “No future without children”. Hungary is the place of the children’s protection and is looking forward to protecting as many children as possible in the world.
