이처럼 독특한 매력을 지닌 코미노는 인기를 끌며 관광 명소로 자리 잡았다. 2025몰타 방문(2025 Visit Malta)에 의하면 2024년에는 “한 번에 블루 라군에 1만2,000명의 관광객이 몰렸다”는 기록이 있을 정도다. 그러나 이처럼 과도한 방문객 증가로 인해 코미노의 취약한 생태계가 훼손되기 시작했다. 이에 따라 2025년 4월 말 코미노를 방문하려는 사람들은 사전에 웹사이트를 통해 예약을 해야 한다는 방침이 발표되었다. 이는 블루 라군의 일일 관광객 수를 4,000명으로 제한하기 위한 조치였다.

Comino can often be found in tourist guides recommending places to visit in Malta. It is indeed an interesting place: The official population consists of a single family of four, the Vella family (Visit Malta, n.d.). Comino is home to the Blue Lagoon, which stands out with its clean waters. Even though the size of the island is just 3.5 km2, divers can choose from 12 diving spots around the island (Visit Malta, n.d.). Visitors can also find a piece of history on this tiny island: fortifications dating as far as the 17th century (Visit Malta, n.d.). One can easily reach Comino by boat from both Malta and Gozo islands.

Due to its uniqueness, Comino became a popular tourist destination. In 2024, as many as “12,000 tourists were recorded at the Blue Lagoon at any one time” (Visit Malta, 2025). Unfortunately, overflow of visitors has resulted in degradation of Comino’s vulnerable ecosystem. As a result, at the end of April 2025 it was announced that those who plan on visiting Comino would be required to book their slots on a website (Visit Malta, 2025). The goal was to restrict the number of tourists at the Blue Lagoon to 4000 (Visit Malta, 2025). The booking system was discontinued shortly after (Meilak, 2025). It was a result of a request calling for suspension of the system filed to the Court by boat operators (Meilak, 2025). The scheme has not been renewed. This year, the peak of tourism in the Blue Lagoon was recorded on the 22nd of August, with a surprising number of 3830 visitors (Times of Malta, 2025). Compared to the peak in 2024, the number of guests fell by 68% (Times of Malta, 2025). 

The booking system is not a single measure but a part of a broader strategy of the Team Blue Lagoon (Visit Malta, 2025). Apart from control of the number of daily visitors, they also aim for extension of swimming zones, enhancement of the waste management system, new sanitation facilities and more efficient enforcement system (VisitMalta, 2025 ). Moreover, on the 10th of September, the Tourism Minister met with representatives of NGOs such as Birdlife Malta, Friends of Earth Malta and Din l-Art Ħelwa (Farrugia, 2025). Some topics discussed during the meeting included waste management and protection of birds (Matthew Farrugia, 2025). 

Comino has gained popularity due to its uniqueness and clean waters in the Blue Lagoon. Unfortunately it is also susceptible to damage due to overflow of visitors. While the scheme to introduce slot booking has failed, it is still crucial to protect the island before its unique features are lost. Fortunately, it seems that there are other efforts undertaken by different organisations as well as the government of Malta to protect the island and its environment.
